Deep Ellum Film Music Arts and Noise (DEFMAN) and DBA Arts Fighting Cancer (AFC) were founded in 1999 with two goals; to produce cutting edge artistic events which appeal to art enthusiasts and film lovers and raise money for cancer relief. Michael Cain, AFC Chairman Emeritus and Garland native began his film career in Los Angeles at the American Film Institute. After learning that his father had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he immediately moved back to Dallas to care for him. Michael received a mandate from his father - “Make other peoples lives better while you are able to do so” and in response, he created the Deep Ellum Film Festival which ran from 1999 to 2006, serving as the cornerstone event for Arts Fighting Cancer.
